Opinion: A cause spanning decades builds to this moment for action

“People often point to a large generational gap in political issues, but age is just a number. The three of us – Dick Mase and Elsa Porter, both 93-year-old retirees, and Mackenzie, a 20-year-old student at the University of Oregon, have demonstrated the power of a shared goal in overcoming a difference of decades.

The shared goal, in this case, is to get Initiative Petition 17 on the November ballot. The proposed legislation would require gun buyers to acquire a permit and pass a background check. It would also ban high-capacity magazines of more than 10 rounds, like the kind used by killers in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York. These are commonsense gun-safety measures meant to protect the health of the public. But this is also something that we, as volunteers working for this cause, each feel personally.”
